Star Sign Tattoos: What You Need to Know From a Christian Perspective

I frequently get requests for star sign and zodiac tattoos at Kingdom Ink. While these designs are popular, I must explain why, from a biblical worldview, I choose not to tattoo this type of art.

Understanding the general meaning of star signs helps illustrate why they directly conflict with Christian principles.

The General Meaning of Star Signs

Astrology—the belief system upon which star signs (or the Zodiac) are based—is the idea that the alignment of the stars and planets at the moment of your birth influences your personality, future, and destiny.

• The Zodiac: This is an imaginary belt in the sky divided into twelve sections, each named after a constellation. Your star sign is simply the constellation the sun was "in" on your birthday.

• The Core Practice: Astrology is used for divination—attempting to gain forbidden knowledge about the future or your character by studying the movement of heavenly bodies.

 

Why Astrology Tattoos Conflict with Christian Principles

The conflict is not with the stars themselves (which God created), but with the act of worshipping or seeking guidance from anything other than the One True God. The Bible condemns astrology because it commits a spiritual sin known as idolatry and divination.

1. Idolatry: Worshipping Creation, Not the Creator

The Bible makes it clear that the stars and planets are creations, not gods or sources of power. Seeking guidance from them is placing their supposed influence above God's absolute sovereignty.

• Deuteronomy 4:19 (NIV) warns against this: "And when you look up to the sky and see the sun, the moon and the stars—all the heavenly array—do not be enticed into bowing down to them and worshiping things the Lord your God has allotted to all the nations."

• Kingdom Ink's Conviction: By getting a star sign tattoo, a person is permanently dedicating a space on their body—the temple of the Holy Spirit—to a symbol of a false religious system that seeks power and destiny outside of Christ.

 

2. Divination: Seeking Forbidden Knowledge

Astrology falls under the category of divination, which the Bible strictly forbids. God wants us to seek guidance only from Him, through His Word (the Bible) and prayer.

• Isaiah 47:13-14 (NIV) mocks those who rely on stargazers: "All the counsel you have received has only worn you out. Let your astrologers [the NIV uses a slightly different word here], those star gazers who make predictions month by month, stand up and save you from what is coming upon you. Surely they are like stubble; the fire will soon burn them up."

• The Spiritual Danger: Relying on the stars is essentially opening yourself up to spiritual influences that are not from God. As I believe that demons and the devil are real, I believe that these systems of divination are gateways for deception and spiritual bondage.

 

3. Rejecting the Sovereignty of God

The Christian life is founded on the belief that God alone directs the path of our lives ($\text{Proverbs 16:9}$). Astrology teaches that impersonal cosmic forces determine our character and fate.

• The True Path: Our future is secured, not by the stars, but by Jesus Christ. Our character is shaped, not by our birth date, but by the Holy Spirit ($\text{Galatians 5:22-23}$).
